HTML5 is the latest hypertext markup language for websites. It primarily aimed to improve the support of multimedia, where earlier it was dependent on plugins like Flash, Silverlight and Java. It includes detailed processing models to encourage more interoperable implementations; it extends, improves and rationalises the markup available for documents, and introduces markup and application programming interfaces (APIs) for complex web applications. HTML5 is also good for cross-platform mobile applications. Many features of HTML5 have been built with the consideration of being able to run on low-powered devices such as smartphones and tablets. However HTML5 cannot alone be useful for animation or interactivity, it must be supplemented with CSS/JavaScript.

  • All major browsers like Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer supports HTML5. Even device independent (i.e., available on all devices and providing the same end experience).
  • HTML5 introduces many new markup elements like <header>, <footer>, <nav>, <video>, <audio>, <embed>, <canvas>, etc.
  • HTML5 specifies scripting application programming interfaces (APIs) that can be used with JavaScript. For example the API used for canvas element for 2D drawing, rich multimedia games, timed media playback, offline we b application, document editing, drag and drop functionality, browser history management, web storage, Geo location,  etc.
  • Less dependence on plugins for functionality.
  • HTML5 along with CSS3 helps in getting advanced effects with less effort and cost. Eventually helping in improved website performance with reduced number of files and images.
